At a press conference Monday, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio threatened a second wave of economic shutdowns, claiming cases of COVID-19 were inching up in the Big Apple.
“God forbid this continued and we had a full-blown second wave. It means a lot more restrictions,” Mayor de Blasio said.
De Blasio’s statement came as the COVID-19 test positivity rate continued to exceed 2% in the city, with 779 new cases reported Monday and 71 newly identified hospitalizations, according to the mayor.
While De Blasio claimed there are no current plans to lock down the Big Apple once again, he said such measures could come in mere days and would affect businesses and schools.
He claimed indoor gatherings should be avoided and masks should be worn at all times, reports Fox 5.
“If these numbers we’re reporting today continue to grow, then people are going to have to get used to more and more restrictions and going back to some of the ways we had to live in the spring,” de Blasio said.
The post-election announcement from the pharmaceutical company Pfizer that a COVID-19 vaccine was nearly ready also hit a roadblock in New York as Gov. Andrew Cuomo expressed resistance to rolling out the vaccine under the Trump Administration, reports the New York Post.
On Good Morning America, Cuomo said the vaccine roll-out plan needed to be stopped until Joe Biden assumes office as president in January, otherwise it will cause “damage.”
“The bad news is that it’s about two months before Joe Biden takes over, and this means [the Trump] administration is going to be implementing a vaccine plan,” Cuomo said, saying any other course would be “flawed.”
“I believe it learns nothing from the past,” Cuomo saud. “They’re basically going to have the private providers do it, and that’s going to leave out all sorts of communities that were left out the first time when COVID ravaged them,” Cuomo said, despite rampant business closures and the Empire State desperately needing a vaccine.
Responding to Cuomo, President Trump called the New York Democrat a “lowlife”.
“Governor Andrew Cuomo of New York wants to put New York at the END of the Vaccine List in that he doesn’t trust the FDA or Federal Government, even though the Vaccines are being developed by the finest Labs in the World,” Trump tweeted.
“Wish he trusted us on Nursing Homes!” Trump continued, referring to New York’s astronomical death rate in elder care facilities, which has earned the governor the nickname “Killer Cuomo.”
Biden, who has been prematurely declared president-elect by media but is so far not the official winner of the 2020 campaign, has declared his first action as president would be to instill a national mask mandate, one likely to be unconstitutional.
Biden says he will institute the mandate by appealing directly to governors and, if they refuse, will go to mayors and county executives and get local masking requirements in place, reports Fox News.
