Chicago, long known for its high crime rates and firearm deaths despite being a gun-free zone, saw a boom in gun-related violence and homicides this Father’s Day weekend, with over 100 people having been shot across the city from Friday evening to Monday morning. Fourteen of the incidents were fatal, with five of those being minors.
The uptick in shootings takes the cake as the deadliest weekend of the year, with the previous title-holder having been the last weekend of May, wherein 85 people were shot, with 24 being fatal.
Chicago Police Supt. David Brown called the shootings destructive, stating: “Bullets don’t just tear apart the things they strike… They tear apart families. Bullets destroy neighborhoods and they ruin any sense of safety in a community.”
According to the Sun Times, two boys, 15 and 16 years old respectively, were the victims of a drive-by shooting, potentially from a gray sedan, with one of the two being shot fatally. The other is in hospital and is considered to be in fair condition.
Perhaps most heartbreaking was the case of a 3-year-old boy who was fatally wounded after someone opened fire at his father while driving in the city’s Austin district. Police say the father was the intended target.
Meanwhile, radical leftist protesters have their targets set on the Chicago Police. According to the Chicago Tribune, Police Chief Eddie Johnson “attempted to hold a press conference, but it was shut down by a group of protesters.”
Black Lives Matter Chicago, meanwhile, continue to tout their demands, which largely contain requests for the dismantling of the police force.
Specifically, demand number two, “CPAC Now” calls for the “immediate implementation of an elected Civilian Police Accountabilty Council with mandated inclusion of survivors and families of victims of police torture and violence – voted in by each neighbourhood.”
“We reject appointees and bourgeois election proposals, which expand the reach of the state to prevent the power to the people,” the demand concludes.
Additionally, demand number three states that police should not be on school premises.
“Cancel CPD contracts with CPS. Fund restorative practices in all schools. Additional social workers and student support personnel in our schools. Make all schools Sustainable Community Schools.”
Chicago isn’t the only city in America to see an increase in crime since police have become cultural pariahs.
Rumors have begun circulating that NYPD officers will ride the “Blue Flu” trend, in which police departments sick-out in order to skip out on working in a hostile environment promoted by Mayor Bill de Blasio.
A text message making its rounds online shows a text which reads: “NYPD cops will strike on July 4 to let the city have their independence without cops. Cops that say we can’t strike because of the Taylor Law. The people and this city doesn’t honor us. Why honor them?”
The message made its way to New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who told NPR: “What the community is now saying, all across this nation. ‘We don’t want this type of police force’ And if they don’t want it, they shouldn’t have it.”
Cuomo was shown a willingness to test Mayor de Blasio’s anti policing rhetoric, telling de Blasio that he “did not do [his] job” when allowing looters and criminals to run rampant on the streets at the start of the Black Lives Matter riots at the end of May.
As the debate rages on as to whether or not policing should exist, the NYPD reported that murders in the city have increased by a whopping 79 percent.
On top of this, shootings increased by 64 percent, while burglaries shot up by 34 percent, according to New York CBS Local.
