A Los Angeles mother accused of murdering her own children is reported to have been “unwell” for several months and was immersed in a difficult custody battle with the father, according to new accounts.
On Sunday Liliana Carrillo, 30, was expected to give her young children to her ex-boyfriend, but a day earlier the kids were found stabbed to death inside their apartment, the mourning father, Erik Denton, said to the Los Angeles Times.
Denton explained he tried to get custody of the kids, who were ages three years old, two years old, and 6 months old, when he said he noticed Carrillo began to display mentally unstable behavior.
“Liliana was very sick, and this is not – she was not herself, and it’s been going on for several months that she has been unwell,” Teri Miller, Denton’s cousin, reported to KTTV.
The grieving father is said to be “devastated,” and Miller explained that Denton had contacted the Department of Children and Family Services as well as police several times because he said that Carrillo “needed help.”
Court documents highlighted by the Times report Denton filed for custody of the two girls and the boy on March 1 in Tulare County family court.
He also asked for a temporary emergency visitation order on March 4, and requested a mental health evaluation of Carrillo, according to the records.
Carrillo replied to the petitions by filing for a temporary domestic violence restraining order against Denton on March 12 in Los Angeles County Superior Court, according to the report.
The orders Denton asked for were prepared at a March 26 hearing. Another hearing in family court on the matter was set for April 14.
Denton reported to the Times he did his best to involve local authorities, however “in LA they wouldn’t help. The LAPD would not get involved.”
“He’s also frustrated with the system, because the system failed them,” his cousin emphasized. “The system failed these kids.”
Neighbors noted that they mostly saw the kids with their grandmother. She was the one said to have found their bodies early on Saturday.
Carrillo was taken in by police in Tulare County shortly after. She was found about 200 miles north of Los Angeles, after seeming to abandon the scene of the incident. She also was said to have dumped her car and carjacked another vehicle before being arrested.
A now-removed Instagram account said to have belonged to the mother posted a link to a blog named “Live Love Laugh Freely” that she seemed to have contributed to since 2013, before she was a mother, the Daily Mail reported.
Most of the posts on the blog were inspirational statements. However, one post was regarding her aggravation with the MTV reality series “Teen Mom.”
“All of these mothers that have been presented have in my opinion, and forgive me if this offends anyone but it is my opinion and I hold strongly to it, just idiot after idiot. I do not feel pity for them,” she wrote, the Mail reports.
“Believe in yourself,” she allegedly continued. “And summon strength from within to push you to do the best you can do. This world is limitless. You are your own worst enemy.”
She seems to have also posted: “There’s no denying that there are a few mothers in the show who progress from their situations and grow from their troubles but there are others that I am shocked as to how or why they still have custody of their child.”
In that very post, she confessed that had also been in “unhealthy relationships” where she would “go out with my girls, drink, smoke, lose control.”
“I’m not perfect. I was a person in these same situations, minus the child,” the blog read.
