The popular streaming platform Netflix issued an apology over promotional materials for an upcoming movie called Cuties, which tracks an underage girl who “becomes fascinated with a twerking dance crew.” The advertisement, showcasing four pre-pubescent girls in sexually suggestive poses, inspired a generally hostile response from people on social media causing Netflix to apologize and deem the image “inappropriate artwork.”
“We’re deeply sorry for the inappropriate artwork that we used for Cuties. It was not OK, nor was it representative of this French film which premiered at Sundance. We’ve now updated the pictures and description,” Netflix wrote in a statement made available to Deadline. Netflix also tweeted an apology on social media.

Viewers will still be able to watch the controversial French film on Netflix in September. The film has a TV-MA rating, and tells the story of an 11-year-old Senegalese Muslim girl trying her hand in a sexually suggestive dance troop.
Netflix’s poster was so eye-popping it incited a petition on Change.org to pull the film from the billion-dollar media platform.
“This movie/show is disgusting as it sexualizes an ELEVEN year old for the viewing pleasure of pedophiles and also negatively influences our children!” wrote the organizer of the petition. “There is no need for this kind of content in that age group, especially when sex trafficking and pedophilia are so rampant! There is no excuse, this is dangerous content!”
The petition rapidly received more than 50,000 signatures after it was created.
Breitbart News reports film director Maïmouna Doucouré says his movie “is in fact a critique of the sexualization of children, specifically the Internet’s role in it.”
Netflix has since edited the film’s description and now paints the movie as the story of an 11-year-old Islamic girl revolting against her “conservative family’s traditions.”
The original adverts read, “Amy, 11, becomes fascinated with a twerking dance crew. Hoping to join them, she starts to explore her femininity, defying her family’s traditions.”
The updated description from Netflix now reads, “Eleven-year-old Amy starts to rebel against her conservative family’s traditions when she becomes fascinated with a free-spirited dance crew.”
Hollywood continues to face accusations of alleged rampant pedophilia and famous actors and studio big-wigs.
Chrissy Teigen, the progressive model and John Legend’s wife, said that she blocked over one million Twitter users last month after people were suggesting she was connected to the billionaire pedophile Jeffrey Epstein. Twitter users dug up problematic social media posts from the model, including:
“seeing little girls fo the splits half naked is just…..I want to put myself in jail #toddlersandtiaras,” and “I just saw a baby that looked like a porn star. Like a trashy do-anything porn star Is this wrong to think?”
Teigen has now removed more than 60,000 tweets, and has rejected any association to Epstein while brushing aside the alarm around her previous statements.
James Gunn, the director of Guardians of the Galaxy, found himself in hot water in 2018 when images surfaced appearing to be Gunn attending a pedophilia-themed party. Gunn was rehired by Disney after they initially released him from his contract over controversial posts he wrote regarding child rape, the Holocaust, and AIDS.
