A man knocked to the ground and brutalized with blows to the head on the streets of New York City Wednesday has now been identified as a retired New York City Police Department officer.
20-year-old Masterjadin Roman of Canarsie, Brooklyn has been identified by police as the suspect who assaulted the former NYPD sergeant, according to the Daily Caller. In surveillance footage of the assault, the retired cop appeared to be having a conversation with Roman when the suspect launched a bottle at the former sergeant’s head, according to the New York Post.
The Post’s video then shows the retiree attempting to fight off the man before being taken to the pavement and beat over the head a dozen times.
In the video, it then appears the suspect and an unidentified accomplice relieve the sergeant of his phone and earpieces.
Before the suspect flees the scene he delivers one, final kick to the police veteran’s head. The Post reports that in lieu of an arrest, Roman was given a notice of a desk appearance and reportedly charged with aggressive panhandling.
The Post reports authorities remain unclear on the motive of the assault. The fight happened outside of a midtown deli in Manhattan’s Garment District, and one witness seemed to come to the sergeant’s aid and offer him a napkin to clean his face as he attempted to get on his feet.
Bloodshed in the Big Apple is exploding in recent months. Compared to 2019, reports indicate New York saw a 177% rise in shootings, a 59% swell in murders, and steep upticks in burglary and auto theft, according to the July NYPD crime statistics.
Due to the spiking crime, COVID-19, and highly criticized mismanagement of the police force by Mayor Bill de Blasio, New Yorkers are now fleeing the City That Never Sleeps. According to reports over 400,000 people have fled to the suburbs or other parts of the country in recent months.
As wealthy tax-payers take flight for their own safety, Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo has been publicly begging for their return. “Our population, one percent of the population [of New York City] pays 50 percent of the taxes. And they’re the most mobile people on the globe,” Cuomo said in a recent press conference.
“I literally talk to people all day long who are now in their Hamptons house who also lived here, or in their Hudson Valley house or in their Connecticut weekend house, and I say, ‘You gotta come back, when are you coming back?'” Cuomo told the press in late July. “‘We’ll go to dinner, I’ll buy you a drink, come over I’ll cook.'”
Mayor de Blasio has downsized the NYPD budget by over a billion dollars since anti-cop riots swept the city and nation. New York officials like Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez have publicly cried out that the city should take more from the cops as more innocent people are attacked in the streets.
The identification of the retired NYPD sergeant and his condition has not been made public by authorities.
